Get Hooked on Fishing (GHOF) Programme.

Registered Charity No 1101901

Get Hooked on Fishing (GHOF) N E Lincs since May 2007, has delivered a variety of youth engagement activities in the North East Lincolnshire Region. The main / core activity is centred on the delivery of coarse / sea / game angling and environmental awareness sessions. Additional youth engagement activities have been successfully developed, such as Laser target shooting, wildlife walks / talks, photography and video. The delivery of all sessions is through the projects qualified and CRB checked Level I & II Coaches.

All session activities are purely used as engagement vehicles designed to develop the young person's interpersonal social and practical skills. The project has had a significant impact with many young people and their families. It has also provided many tangible benefits to the community.

Get Hooked on Fishing N E Lincs works in partnership with Shoreline Housing Partnership, the principal stakeholder and funders since May 2007. Additional key partners are the North East Lincolnshire Council, Immingham Town Council and the Environment Agency. The North East Lincolnshire Council provides the Project with office space within the Directorate of "Children and Family Services" and gives the project financial management and support.

The Get Hooked on Fishing (North East Lincolnshire) is the 10th project in the UK and by 2010 there will be 30 such projects which will cover the whole UK. It may be worth viewing the national website to see what remarkable achievements the project has had with young people and the effects the programme has also had in local communities. www.ghof.org.uk

STRUCTURED DEVELOPMENT PATHWAYS

GHOF Taster and Module 1, 2 & 3 Sessions offer the student clear pathways to progression. For some candidates, there is also an opportunity at an additional cost to achieve NOCN (National Open Collage Network) nationally recognised Angling and Wildlife Accreditation or to become a Licensed Angling Coach. The Module part of the programme is open to young people aged between 8 to 19 and Modules are only available to young people without any criminal convictions. Other programmes exist to cater for other age ranges or for those young people who have convictions. Primarily however, GHOF is a preventative programme for 10 to 16 year olds.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

All sessions utilise a structured personal development programme tailored to meet the individual needs of the student. Peer mentoring is central to the core objectives of GHOF and is encouraged and developed throughout all sessions. Successful peer mentoring promotes and allows the long term integration of young people within future projects and significantly increases their self esteem, self worth, communication skills and contributes to their own personal development.

SESSION CONTENT

All sessions begin with health and safety talks and include in depth talks / demonstrations relating to the environment and wildlife etc. Computers may also be used (fishing simulators) enabling students to harness literacy, numeracy, sciences and biology skills. In some sessions, students will be encouraged to use computer based technologies to research their own project work further developing (curriculum based) learning and educational skills. Licensed Angling Instructors ensure all education is delivered in a fun and dynamic way and is tailored to suit each student's individual needs. To assess learning has taken place, GHOF have developed a number of different audio, visual, written and PC methods which reinforce that effective learning has taken place. The student's are expected to complete a portfolio and demonstrate their new skills in various practical fishing exercises.

EQUIPMENT

All equipment, bait and pegging fees are included. Students owning their own equipment are allowed to bring it, however no liability for its loss or damage will be the responsibility of GHOF.

At present, sessions are subsidised due to funding which has been made available through Shoreline Housing Partnership.
